Perseverance In Prayer
Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matt 26:41

Here Jesus teaches that vigilance and prayer are key to avoiding temptation. Both are necessary, but neither is sufficient to save you from temptation or failing the test.

Furthermore He reveals the state of the body and spirit of man in the context of prayer, when temptation is imminent. Jesus assures us that the spirit is indeed willing to pray, but the flesh is weak, with no desire to pray.

So what must one do? Since the spirit is willing we must draw on its strength by praying with it. How?

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 1 Cor 14:14

Speak in tongues, and take practical steps to jolt your flesh out of its weakness. If it’s sleep don’t lie down, close your eyes or sit down whilst your spirit prays; instead, walk about, wash your face, increase the intensity or passion of your prayer.

Sooner than later, like a car that won’t start due to a weak battery will jump start, your flesh will receive the needed strength and willingly support your spirit to pray effortlessly.

A man’s days are laden with temptations as landmines and tests as hidden treasures. You need to watch and pray, so you do not fall into temptation or fail the test.
